  1. OPERATION BODENPLATTE
  2.  
  3. On January 1, 1945, the Luftwaffe launched
  4. a surprise offensive against Allied airfields 
  5. in Holland, Belgium, and northern France. 
  6. Designed to destroy the Allied Tactical Air
  7. Forces in these areas, Operation Boden-
  8. platte involved nearly 800 Luftwaffe 
  9. fighter planes.  The attack was very suc-
  10. cessful against some airfields, with 150
  11. Allied planes destroyed and another 50
  12. heavily damaged.  
  13.  
  14. However, the operation cost the Luftwaffe 
  15. dearly: nearly 300 German aircraft were 
  16. lost, 151 pilots killed or MIA, and 63 
  17. pilots captured.  Of the pilots who died,
  18. 26 were high ranking, experienced comman-
  19. ders or leaders.  Also, many of the aircraft
  20. lost were hit by German flak, as their flak 
  21. installations had not been notified of the 
  22. operation.

  26. As participants in Operation Bodenplatte, you 
  27. and your wingman, flying Bf 109G-10s, are to 
  28. attack the aircraft and buildings at Deelen
  29. airfield.  Your Bf 109 is armed with bombs.  
  30. A pair of FW 190s is on the attack run with 
  31. you.  As you approach the airfield, you will
  32. notice P-47s patrolling the area.  There is 
  33. also a flight of P-51s preparing to take off 
  34. from the strip.
